Oyo APC boils again as Ganduje plans to hand the party to Adelabu, Adeseun

Image
The crisis rocking the All Progressives Congress(APC) in Oyo State is getting worse as party faithful last night vehemently opposed reported plans by the National Chairman of the party,Dr Umar Ganduje to hand over the control of the party to the dissident members who are in the Accord Party. Many party sources in Ibadan and Abuja confirmed that the national Chairman in several meetings with the minister for power,Chief Adebayo Adelabu and leader of Accord party in Oyo State,Senator Abiola  Adeseun had resolved to set up a caretaker committee to oversea the affairs of the party in the state. Ganduje, at a meeting of some stakeholders in the party last month in Abuja, had hinted that the Omodewu led executive committee would be dissolved to accommodate returning members from the Accord party  who left the APC ahead of  the last election. Competent party sources said last night that Ganduje in the next few days will action the plan. In place of the Omodewu led executive woul...

Guber Polls: Fear, Anxiety Envelope Bayelsa, Kogi, Imo Residents

Image
Ahead of Saturday, November 11 gubernatorial elections in Imo, Bayelsa and Kogi states, tension is high, particularly in Imo and Kogi states, where the indices are not looking so good. There are fears as threats of violence loom large, especially in the two states. It was the same scenario in the two states during the 2023 general elections. Feelers show that though residents are desirous of coming out en-masse during the polls, they are afraid of losing their lives. They are equally skeptical and concerned that the electoral umpire, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), might not deliver free, fair and credible elections, considering what happened during the 2023 general elections. The destruction of posters of the opposition candidates in states like Imo and Kogi, the physical attacks on party supporters and the malfunctioning of the BVAS machines have not helped matters either. However, President Bola Tinubu had during the handing over of the All Progressives Congres...

Avoiding technical glitches in Nov 11 polls||Omale Samuel

Image
The memory of the 2023 presidential election is still fresh in our minds. According to the Electoral Act 2022, and the Independent National Electoral Commission guidelines, INEC was expected to transmit the election results from the polling units electronically in real-time to the Result Viewing Portal. INEC transmitted the National Assembly election results in real time as promised, and the outcomes were clear in many states. Overall, IReV greatly manifested in the outcome of the National Assembly election results, as people who could not buy votes won the election to become federal lawmakers. Kudos to INEC in this regard but the commission failed to transmit the presidential election result in real-time as promised, and attributed it to “technical glitches.” The off-season state elections are here again (the Kogi, Imo, and Bayelsa governorship elections) and many people are wondering if the experience of the presidential election in February 2023 will repeat itself, in terms of...

Ariwoola, Salute To Wisdom

Image
Given the toxicity and the incendiary waves of the period and leading to the Supreme Court adjudicating on the appeal by former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi, of the Labour Party, what would have been said of Chief Justice Kayode Ariwoola is better imagined than experienced if he had headed the Supreme Court panel of the Justices to hear the appeals! He did not also enlist on the panel the two other Justices from South-West, Justice Kudirat Akin-Kekere Ekun and Justice Helen Ogunwunwumi. The judgment would have been a bone of fierce contention, to put it mildly, between the Yoruba and the Igbo: What do you expect, is Ariwoola not a Yorubaman? He gave the judgment in favour of his brother, Tinubu! That would have been the careless and cruel talk. Did a Professor not say Chief Justice Ariwoola flew to London under the guise that he was ill to meet secretly with Tinubu? It was false and the fellow, a lawyer for that matter, was to promptly apologise. There were bush radios a...

Oyo :Tracking $1.7m Stray Elephant In Saki ||Damilola Ayeni

Image
When a stray elephant died last year barely 24 hours after capture by the University of Ibadan, the general response was ‘How?’. It was to find answers that I set out on a sunny Tuesday morning and almost never returned. But the answer is here, and more. Eight cells, 16 handcuffs … The thing about elephants: they are as smart as their size. They live in family groups and solve their own problems. By trampling forests and grasslands, they increase carbon storage and make room for smaller animals to co-exist, and they are rare in Africa now. One strayed into Gobo, a community between the Saki area of Oyo and Kwara State, Nigeria, last year and blocked a farm from the sun. First, the farm looked dark, as if it was about to rain, and then an old farmer spotted the elephant. Anyone would be scared, but this was a harmless mammoth. Villagers would offer it some leaves and it would give them its back to climb. Children flocked around the elephant, and it walked majestically amidst them ...

Climate Change: Creating Sustainable Climate Finance For Nigeria|| Patience Ivie Ihejirika

Image
Like many other countries, Nigeria is grappling with the devastating impacts of climate change, including extreme weather events and ecological disruptions, said the minister of state for Environmental, Dr. Iziaq Salako. He said climate change poses an existential threat to Nigeria, thus the need for comprehensive, sustainable, and innovative solutions. The minister stated this at the 2nd National Conference on Climate Change, themed: Creating an Agenda for Sustainable Climate Finance for Nigeria,” organised by the Corporate Accountability & Public Participation Africa (CAPPA), in Abuja. “As we confront these challenges, we must recognise that addressing climate change is not solely an environmental concern. It is an economic, social, and moral imperative that demands coordinated and collective action,” Iziaq added. However, he expressed the federal government’s commitment to addressing climate change and promoting sustainable climate finance, and working towards the National...

Nigeria In Peculiar Mess-Penkelemesi||Ighodalo Clement Eromosele

Image
There is no doubt that President Bola Tinubu’s government is trying to manage an ailing economy, prostrate on multidimensional fronts through drastic policies, which appear to exacerbate it. The reactions of the people, in pains and agony, are palpable such that the government is compelled to review such policies at frequent intervals. This is understandable given the complexities of the problems and the absence of a reliable data upon which to plan. But the case of Nigeria is a ‘peculiar mess’ to adopt the phraseology of the late Gbadamosi Adegoke Adelabu, the Yoruba version of which is penkelemesi. It is a peculiar mess because it is self-inflicted, but nonetheless reversible if the system of governance is right as envisioned by the founding fathers before Independence. In 1957, Alhaji Abubakar Tafawa Balewa said: “I am pleased to see that we are now all agreed that the federal system is, under the present conditions, the only sure basis on which Nigeria will remain united. We must r...

Governors And Their Political Godfathers: A Predictable Pattern

Image
Nigeria’s political landscape continues to be a never-ending source of drama, akin to a captivating telenovela series that unveils a new episode each week. The most recent installment of this ongoing political saga unfolds in Rivers State, where Governor Sim Fubara finds himself embroiled in a highly publicized dispute with his predecessor and the current Federal Capital Territory (FCT) minister, Wyesom Wike. This recurring narrative of conflicts between political godfathers and their successors has become an enduring theme in Nigerian politics. It’s a script that has played out repeatedly across the nation since the dawn of the Fourth Republic in 1999. The predictability of these clashes is almost disheartening, leaving many to wonder if they have not witnessed this movie before. In Nigeria, the hierarchy of political power is quite clear: second only to the president, governors wield immense influence. The ability to influence policies, direct resources, and control the levers of pow...

Jet Crash: I’m Unperturbed- Tinubu's Minister,Adelabu

Image
Minister of Power, Mr Adebayo Adelabu, on Saturday allayed fears about his safety following Friday’s incident near the Ladoke Akintola Airport in Ibadan, Oyo. A source close to the Minister told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Ibadan that Adelabu was in good spirits and not perturbed by the incident. NAN reports that the private aircraft which had the minister and some of his aides had crash-landed near the airport late Friday evening. ”The Minister feels the incident is not something to worry about. It was actually a minor thing, and that is how he has taken it,” an aide of the Minister, who asked to stay anonymous, said. He told NAN further that the Minister was particularly not worried by the incident because it did not involve any of the passengers leaving with any injury. ”Everyone on board the aircraft when the incident happened actually alighted without any problem, and we have no cause to worry,” the aide said. The aircraft had departed Abuja with Ibadan as its destination,...
